Depuis que MACLEAN’S a fait sa une avec Bonhomme trimbalant joyeusement sa mallette débordante de dollars (canadiens et américains) et flanqué d’un titre accusant Québec d’être la province canadienne la plus corrompue, les complaintes pleuvent. On accuse la publication de faire du « Quebec Bashing ». Et si elle n’avait pas tout faux?...
En lisant le long article de Martin Péloquin et la plus courte analyse de son collègue Andrew Coyne, difficile de dire qu’ils ont tout faux. La preuve est soutenue par une liste impressionnante de scandales politiques : les révélations de la Commission Bastarache, le scandale des commandites, les transactions troubles à la mairie de Montréal, l’affaire BCIA, le Shawinigate, etc. On remonte même le cours de l’histoire en rappelant notamment la corruption dans l’industrie de la construction des années 70 et l’intervention financière
douteuse d’un riche homme d’affaires montréalais dans la campagne électorale de John A MacDonald en 1872. Somme toute, un historique difficile à nier. Quelques faux pas toutefois : l’illustration et le titre choisis à la une confèrent une allure de tabloïd à sensation détonnant avec la publication généralement crédible. De plus, on offre peu de données spécifiques validant la position du Québec en comparaison aux autres provinces. En revanche, on soulève un lien fort avec le fédéral dans plusieurs scandales et l’on cite des moments moins reluisants d’autres provinces. Reste que la donne du Québec est lourde et notre rendement anormalement élevé en matière de corruption terni sérieusement notre belle province.
Mais plus dérangeant encore que ces faux pas, c’est qu’avant même de considérer le propos (et sa relative justesse), on crie haut et fort au dénigrement. Pourtant, les québécois sont des « kings du bashing ». On ne perd jamais de temps ici pour dénigrer les anglais, les riches, les femmes de pouvoir, Carey Price… Le moindre écart est vastement élargit et médiatisé à outrance, avec fortes accusations et doléances. On passe plus de temps à débusquer la moindre petite bête noire qu’à valoriser les bons coups, même des nôtres. Mais si quelqu’un ose jouer le même jeu et nous rendre la monnaie de notre pièce, on s’empresse de jouer la victime.Â
S’il est vrai que MACLEAN’S a manqué de discernement dans son approche, sachons nous-mêmes discerner les vérités et assumer la responsabilité des torts qui nous reviennent. Plutôt que de crier à l’affront, pourquoi ne pas communiquer plus civilement nos indispositions? Peut-être arriverons-nous à créer une société plus tolérante, voire même, plus équitable.
