CHIENS-SAUVETEURS PRÊTS À SECOURIR

Dressés au sauvetage en mer, ils sont 300 chiens à patrouiller les plages italiennes avec leurs maîtres, une activité reconnue par les autorités, fait unique en Europe. L'École italienne des chiens de sauvetage a été créée il y a 20 ans et ses Labradors, Golden Retrievers et Terre-Neuve ont déjà sauvé plus de cent personnes de la noyade, dont 12 cet été. « Par rapport aux autres pays, l'école est la seule à effectuer une surveillance continue et systématique de dizaines de plages avec des unités cynophiles », explique à l'AFP Roberto Gasbarri, responsable de l'institution pour la région centre-sud.

Cette activité menée dans presque toutes les régions italiennes, y compris sur les lacs du Trentin et de Vénétie (nord-est), est bénévole mais reconnue par la protection civile et coordonnée sur le littoral par les capitaineries des ports. « Cela fait cinq ans que nous travaillons avec eux; leur aide est très précieuse et ils sont absolument fiables », confie Lamberto Alessandro, commandant des garde-côtes de Tarquinia, à 100 km au nord de Rome. Même si les chiens sont la coqueluche des enfants et les sauveteurs ont parfois des allures d'acteurs d' « Alerte à Malibu », tout le monde prend ce travail très au sérieux.

Le brevet de secouriste pour le chien et son maître s'obtient après un minimum d'un an et demi de formation, avec des entraînements au sol, puis dans l'eau. Tous les ans, l'unité cynophile doit repasser les épreuves avant l'été. « Les cinq épreuves du brevet sont plutôt difficiles, il faut réussir à nager presque aussi vite que son chien », explique Paola de Santis, 36 ans, qui avec Teo, son Labrador de 5 ans, en est à ses premières armes. Sauvetages en nageant depuis la plage, en sautant d'un zodiac ou d'un hélicoptère, l'école a développé une série de techniques que l'on vient étudier de toute l'Europe.

« Nous avons un système spécial qui permet de sauver trois personnes en même temps. Le sauveteur attache deux personnes au chien. Il est donc libre de s'occuper de la troisième, ce qui lui évite des allers retours épuisants et accélère le sauvetage », poursuit Roberto. Le cas s'est produit début août à Tarquinia, sur la plage de Sant-Agostino, où quatre petites filles, deux tombées d'un bateau et deux autres d'un matelas pneumatique à cause du vent, ont été secourues grâce aux chiens.

« Ici, il y a des zones très dangereuses, des trous où, quand il y a beaucoup de courant et de grosses vagues, seul un chien peut intervenir, car contrairement à l'homme, il ne craint pas le danger », remarque le maire de Tarquinia, Mauro Mazzola. Pour eux, secourir une personne qui se noie est comme un jeu. Les Golden Retrievers, Labradors et Terre-Neuve sont des races dociles et placides, qui aident les pêcheurs du nord canadien à récupérer sans les endommager les poissons coincés dans les mailles de leurs filets.

« Ils sont plus prédisposés que d'autres à la nage, car leur poil permet d'évacuer l'eau rapidement, ils ont les pattes palmées et en rejetant plus d'eau vers l'arrière, ils nagent plus vite que d'autres chiens », souligne Paola. Leur présence juste après un accident a en outre des vertus thérapeutiques, notamment pour les enfants. « Les caresses, les câlins et le jeu contribuent chez l'enfant à atténuer le choc », explique Roberto.
